BREAKING: Soldiers Kill Suspected Bandit, Arrest Two Kidnappers in Benue

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have killed a suspected bandit and arrested two suspected kidnappers during separate operations in Benue State.

The operations, carried out following intelligence on the activities of criminal groups operating in the state, targeted suspected kidnappers and bandits in different locations.

According to the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the first operation took place on August 19 along the Jortar-Atume axis.

Troops had received credible intelligence about the activities of a suspected bandit leader and his associates, who were allegedly operating an illegal checkpoint in the area.

Acting on the information, the troops moved to the location to disrupt the criminal activity.

On arrival, the soldiers encountered the suspected criminals, leading to a firefight.

During the exchange of gunfire, one suspected bandit, identified by the nickname “Cool Nigga”, was killed.

Other members of the group reportedly fled from the scene, abandoning a motorcycle which was subsequently recovered by the troops.

The operation was part of ongoing efforts by the military to disrupt criminal networks operating along routes and communities affected by banditry and kidnapping in Benue State.

### Two suspected kidnappers arrested

In a separate operation carried out on the same day, troops deployed in Logo Local Government Area arrested two suspected kidnappers at Gou Village.

The suspects were identified as 44-year-old Terhile Iyo and 32-year-old Vershima Emmanuel.

According to the military, the arrests followed credible information about the activities of suspected kidnappers operating in the area.

Preliminary investigations reportedly linked the two men to an attempted kidnapping involving a resident of Gou Village, identified as Balame Nyikwagh.

The suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement in the attempted kidnapping during preliminary questioning.

Troops reportedly recovered a locally made pistol, multiple SIM cards and charms from the suspects.

The arrested men have been taken into military custody for further investigation as security authorities continue efforts to establish the extent of their alleged involvement in kidnapping activities.

### Military intensifies operations in Benue

The latest operations come amid continued security challenges in parts of Benue State, where communities and major roads have faced threats from kidnappers, bandits and other armed criminal groups.

Operation Whirl Stroke is one of the military's formations responsible for tackling armed violence and criminal activities across Benue and neighbouring states.

The task force has continued to rely on intelligence from residents and other sources to identify criminal hideouts, disrupt kidnapping operations and apprehend suspects.

Military authorities have repeatedly urged residents to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing attacks and protecting communities.

The latest operation also highlights the military's strategy of combining intelligence gathering with targeted deployments against suspected criminal networks.

While one suspected bandit was killed during the Jortar-Atume operation, other members of the group escaped before troops could apprehend them.

Security personnel are expected to continue follow-up operations aimed at locating fleeing members of the group and dismantling their network.

The two suspects arrested in Logo are also expected to undergo further investigation, which could provide security agencies with additional information about other individuals allegedly involved in kidnapping activities in the area.

Authorities have not indicated whether the suspects have been formally charged with any offence.

The military's use of the term “suspected” reflects that the allegations against the arrested men remain subject to investigation.

Operation Whirl Stroke continues to maintain security operations across vulnerable areas of Benue State as the military and other security agencies work to disrupt kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminal activity.
